Or this layout has no name yet. The idea is it will be a fictitious heritage / preserved line to keep the purists at bay and allow different ages of rolling stock to be ran at the same time.

When I was a child my favourite toy was the Triang Hornby OO gauge train set laid out on the carpet in my mothers front room "the parlour". I used to leave it down for what seemed to be weeks, much to the annoyance of my mother who had to negotiate over it every day. It was an old Triang/Hornby set passed down from my elder brother and added too over the years. As I grew I got more into the model making part of it and enjoyed seeing the dioramas in the exhibitions at the Liverpool Bluecoat Chambers. Eventually I joined the Merseyside Model Railway Society as a junior when their base was in the Antiques Triangle in Birkenhead. While there I was fortunate to help them run the biannual exhibition at the "Bluecoat" and was a part of the "OO gauge" group. They had a very well constructed small town branch line terminus station with goods yard and engine shed with a coal yard. They also had a mainline loop under construction in an adjacent room with an MPD the intention was to link the two through the wall. Stayed with them for a few years then more adult interests took over. I unfortunately never saw the completion of the mainline loop layout, but I did hear it was completed before they had to move from the Antiques Triangle due to redevelopment of the area.

Baseboard Building

I have been promising the grandchildren a OO gauge model railway for quite literally years, so I finally made a start. The idea was to have the baseboard hung on the wall in such a way it can be folded away when not in use. In the pictures here I have made the simple frame for the small fiddle yard that will be permanently secured to the garage wall. The small baseboard is cut and placed on the frame and the folding section is now almost finished.


The main folding baseboard is now attached by 4 hinges to the fiddle yard. Planning has started by laying out a Hornby base layout so the grandchildren can have a play. Along with "Granddad" !

Planing and Design, the track plan

A few years have passed and the dust has been blown off the baseboard so new plans and progress. So the Model Railway starts to take shape on paper. Careful planning using paper print outs of PECO points. However having a big box of Hornby track is really forcing down the Hornby OO gauge track. It will probably end up as a hybrid or both manufactures Model Railway products


Once the idea was "on paper" from a CAD program I found on the internet. I then decided to dry try it out. Using track I already had and paper printouts to scale of items not yet in the box. This allowed me see if some ideas I had after the CAD version may in fact be possible. One item I wanted was a Double Slip somewhere.

Laying Track and Ballast

Some changes to the plan by moving one set of points on the runaround to curved points and make them as none facing point on the mainline. Also by doing this the radius of the curve had to be increased and this means the fiddle yard needs to be adjusted. TBD !!!


The track bed is first painted grey and the sleepers painted brown with drop wires added to the DCC bus and then the track laid. Then trying out ballasting (for the first time) of the tracks with grey ballast from Woodland Scenics . Needs a lot more doing yet this was just a trial. Notice an additional siding to the bay platform. The eagle eyed will notice the R418 Hornby OO Dunster Station building placed where it is intended to be. Platforms will need to be built and added once all the track work has been done and tested. The track ballast will continue after that.

Start of wiring & DCC and Point Motors

Adding the DCC Bus and the drop wires to each individual track section and Seep point motors and preliminary wiring to the crossover loop.


As with the mainline each track segment has individual drop wires down to the DCC bus. Looking back down the board the final design is starting to show, the twin sidings one for the proposed good shed the other a coal yard. The small engine shed for the station pilot in the final position. Next the track bed needs laying then the track. I'm pleased with how things are developing along in the model railway. Just need to secure down the good yard track and then get back to the fiddle yard. I will probably either need to create an access hole in the main board or split the two boards to get to the back. Design fault my arms are not that long to get to the back. Whooops !

The goods yard and shed

Having considered how to add a goods yard and engine shed (from Metcalfe Models) the track base is now being laid in that area. Wanted to make use of a "Double Slip" in the design so in it goes. Need to get the main track laid so I can separate the main board from the fiddle in order to actually reach it and make some progress on it so trains can actually go all the way around before adding buildings and countryside scenics. Notice the heavy tools and tubs holding down the cork trackbed as the PVA sets. While the paint on cork trackbed dries I need carry on painting the sleepers a nice coat of brown, don't need to be tidy as it will dry smoother and the ballast will hide a lot. Tedious job but worth it, even on the double slip.


Finalising the position of the goods shed making sure there is room for the coal siding next to it and not wanting the goods shed to over shadow the station entrance. Cork trackbed cut and glued down followed once set with the track using watered down PVA with some washing up liquid as a wetting agent. Left under pressure overnight or longer as its getting colder now in October (2017) so takes longer to set.


As with all the track, each individual track section has drop wires down to the DCC bus running under the tracks. This is the next section to do once the glue has dried and the tracks are secure.
A dark and wet Sunday and the extra bus wires are added into place, the drop wires need to a connected and the bus wires secured to the baseboard and kept a distance apart to prevent any short circuits. Just deciding on a material to use as a insulating separator so need dig out the scrap box again.
